It is located between the Andes mountail range and the Patagonian steppe, about 150 kilometers from Puerto Natales and 450 kilometers from Punta Arenas.
It was created in 1959 and with a territory of 227,298 hectares, it comprises the Paine mountain range and its famous massif, which includes the Paine Grande peaks and its well-known towers, which give it its name.
Known internationally for the scenic beauty of its surroundings, it receives annually more than 80,000 visitors, most of them foreigners, becoming the third Chilean protected area by visits. Owner of a rich history, this territory was first inhabited by the indigenous people Aonkienk or Tehuelches, whose records, in some cases, reach more than 3500 years of history.
The year 1959, as a product of different campaigns of inhabitants of the Region and visitors, during the government of President Jorge Alessandri a first protected area was established, which was rapid and successively expanded to the current size. This National Park has allowed the protection and recovery of large exploited areas for livestock and agricultural purposes, in addition to a transformation of the economy of the Region with a sustained growth of tourism and its associated services.
